Finding a concealer you love, *especially* when you have acne-prone or sensitive skin, can take a lot of trial and error. Not only are you worried about coverage, but you also have to think about how the formula feels, what’s in it, and whether your skin feels comfortable after a full day of wear.
So, what should you actually look for? Here’s my tried and true tips on how to choose a concealer with both your makeup goals and your reactive skin’s needs in mind.
1. Look for coverage with a lightweight feel and formula
When you want to conceal a breakout, it can be tempting to reach for the thickest formula you can find in an attempt to get the coverage you’re looking for. But more product doesn’t always create a better finish. Heavy layers can emphasize raised blemished and dry patches, and can also form an occlusive physical barrier over your skin which can trap sebum, moisture, and sweat, often causing new breakouts. Instead, look for a concealer that delivers buildable, highly pigmented coverage with a lightweight texture. Pay attention to how it feels on your skin as well as how it looks: you want a formula that sits comfortably on your skin and covers without excessive layering.
A lightweight concealer can also work beautifully for a more widespread, skin-like coverage, softening the appearance of redness across your cheeks or nose. I’ve completely stopped using foundation and use Omora’s Soft Cover Concealer instead, blending a small amount over a wider area wherever I want lighter coverage and adding a little more where I need it over active breakouts or pigmentation. It’s an easy way to customize coverage while keeping the finish natural.
2. Choose fragrance-free formulas
If your skin is sensitive, fragrance is worth paying attention to. It can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people, and even natural essential oils can be irritating. Learn more about potential irritants from the AAD.
Look specifically for fragrance-free, and review the ingredient list for anything you already know your skin doesn’t tolerate. “Unscented” isn’t necessarily the same thing: a product can contain fragrance-related ingredients without having an obvious scent.
3. Make comfort part of your criteria
When you’re dealing with breakouts, it can be tempting to choose the most mattifying formula available. But acne-prone skin can still feel dry, tight, or flaky, especially when you are using (or overusing) actives at night. Drying out your skin isn’t the goal. The AAD cautions that dryness and irritation can make acne harder to manage. So no, choosing a concealer formulated with salicylic acid or another drying active is *not* your best option (yes, I did make this mistake).
When trying a concealer, notice more than the initial finish. Does your skin feel comfortable a few hours later? Does the product sit well over your usual moisturizer? Does it emphasize areas that already feel dry?
A concealer should fit into the routine that works for your skin. It doesn’t need to double as an acne treatment.
4. Find Coverage You Can Control
For spot concealing, look for a formula that lets you start with a small amount and add coverage where you want it.
A lightweight texture and buildable coverage can give you flexibility: a little around the nose, a more precise application over a blemish, or additional coverage for visible discoloration.
Remember that concealer can soften the appearance of redness and uneven tone, but it won’t erase raised texture. Real skin has dimension, and a successful makeup application can still look like skin (and honestly, it looks better this way).
5. Choose Your Shade Based on Your Goal
If your main goal is covering blemishes, start with a shade that closely matches the surrounding skin. A lighter shade intended for brightening under the eyes can draw attention to a spot.
Check both the depth and undertone, and assess the shade in natural light after it has settled. When possible, compare swatches on skin with a similar tone to yours (or use our virtual try on service ;))
